Is there a way to plot an elevation along a curved boundary in Coordinates CARTESIAN3?

Currently, no there is not. We intend to add the ability to do this in version 6.

How would I plot an elevation along a spiral boundary in any coordinates (v5.0.19)?
Thanks

This will depend on how the domain is described.

If you construct a spiral domain by transformation (as in the sample problem "3d_helix_wrapped.pde" http://www.pdesolutions.com/help/index.html?usage_3d_domains_3d_helix_wrapped.ht ml )
then the elevation plot is simply a line in the non-transformed domain.

If you construct a spiral domain by layers (as in the sample problem "3d_helix_layered" http://www.pdesolutions.com/help/index.html?usage_3d_domains_3d_helix_layered.ht ml )
then this becomes much more difficult. This would have to be done in pieces along the edge of each region, generating one plot per segment. This will only work in version 6.

The other option is to use some other visualization software like Visit.

How exactly would it work in FlexPDE 6? Could I give the equation of a curve, for example?

Also in "3d_helix_layered" is it possible to have the pitch to be less than 2*zhigh?

1. You can plot elevations "ON" pathnames "ON" surfaces. You cannot define an arbitrary path.

2. You should be able to define any pitch you want, as long as the layers don't intersect. Simply change the definition of "pitch". I tried it with 1.2*zhigh and it worked successfully.
