We have not done extensive study of plasticity with FlexPDE, but we have done some simple studies that indicate it will work successfully.

There are several ways to address the problem. With a fixed mesh, you can detect the onset of plasticity as long as the deformations are small. For larger displacements, you need a moving-mesh, time-dependent model. You cannot let the elasticity drop to zero, or the mesh will collapse and halt the simulation. You should smooth the transition from elastic to plastic state, or the computation will thrash.

Thank you very much Nelson.

Could I ask are there any examples I can learn? I am just a new hand for Flexpde.

Cheers,

Jane
