Hi!

I am trying to look at nonlinear spatiotemporal instabilities in large Fresnel number optical systems using the classical Maxwell-Bloch equations. These nonlinear equations couple field, polarization and carrier/atomic-population dynamics. These systems are known to show complex spatiotemporal behaviour and instabilities (of Benjamin-Fier type). I have the following questions:

How do I make sure that I am not getting contribution from numerical dispersion errors/instabilities while investigating these spatiotemporal dynamics/instabilities in FlexPDE? In other words I need to know weather I should use FlexPDE’s adaptive mesh refinement or I can set my own node limit without generating numerical instability in the solution.

The problem is that the FlexPDE’s adaptive mesh refinement continues for a very long time (almost for ever) unless I specify my own ‘node limit’. Is there a way of choosing an appropriate nodelimit for a given system of equations. Please advice.

JM
